Automatic street light

Street lights that switch on at dusk, dim when they can, and switch off at dawn, with no one touching a switch.

The problem

Street lights switched by hand are left on in daylight or forgotten at night, wasting power.

1An LDR measures the light level and the Arduino reads it as a value from 0 to 1023
2The value is compared against a threshold to decide between off, dim and full brightness
3The ATmega328P on the Arduino drives ten LEDs along a model street

The model switches and dims by itself. A suggested next step was solar cells, so the batteries never need replacing.
